Archaeology, Week 1

Archaeology, Week 1

The archaeological investigations have started on Montpelier Retreat and weekly updates on the findings and progress will be published on the website.

During the first week, the team mapped out possible locations for the Reverend Knopwood’s cottage and Alexander Orr’s house and have started to peel back the layers to investigate what lies beneath. Building foundations, artefacts, soil and rock will be exposed and examined over the coming weeks to piece together the past of Montpelier Retreat.

Justin McCarthy, Director of Austral Tasmania Pty Ltd explains what they are looking for and how.

The investigations are expected to take up to 16 weeks to complete, prior to excavation of the site.
